OMG. OMFG. I am going to try to stop hyperventilating long enough to breathe and write this blog post. Suze Orman knows we exist!! That’s right, Suze FREAKING Orman, my idol of all idols. And she taped a video for Life After College!
When Orman’s media team got in touch and asked me to submit a question for her to answer via video, I was tempted to ask “HOW CAN I BE YOU?!” but came to my senses and went with something more practical (props to Lauren for suggesting the winning question via Twitter). I’m thrilled to report that she and her team came through, and that my life is now complete! Okay, well close
The question:
A good portion of my audience would describe themselves as “Young, Fabulous and Broke” – as your book is so aptly named. What is the most important thing for recent graduates to remember as they try to balance paying bills, having fun, paying off student loans and saving for retirement? How should they prioritize all those things?
Suze’s Response (Click here to open in a new window):
Want more Suze? (How AWESOME is that black leather jacket, btw?!) Check-out her website, YouTube channel, Facebook fan page and follow her on twitter.

Way to go Ms. Jenny!!! Ms. Orman better watch her back, cause Ms. Blake is right on her tail…
I'll admit it, I'm a big Suze Orman fan too. Women who know how to handle their money are sexy! (Not that's I'm hitting on Suz, but you know what I mean.) She gives GREAT advice! Such a smart woman and her story as to how she got to where she is – very inspiring. Oh…and she wears mean jackets!
Kidding about that last part. I just can't get those SNL parody clips out of my head – jackets, jackets, jackets! “Always save money for jackets.”
Anyway, you must be bursting at your jacket seams with excitement right now! To have Suze Orman speak personally to you, oooh man!
I am pretty much ready to explode. Didn't want to get my hopes up, but
knowing her video was coming in today was like trying to go to bed on
Christmas Eve!
Haven't seen the jackets clip! Clearly I need to. I think women who can
. Not that I date women,
handle their money are sexy too…but I'm biased
but you get the point.
I loved how adamant she was about contributing up to the match on your
401(k) – “even if you don't have a pot to pee in.” WORD! Then getting out of
credit card debt and setting up and Emergency Fund. Those are the basics,
but soooo important.
Thanks for sharing the Suze excitement – wuhoooo!
OMFG indeed! Way to go!
Thanks Sam!!
I hope all is well with you and your beautiful little girl
Loved your
post for Elisa's series (and the “married to five women” one) – keep up the
great stuff!
Ok, I am reluctant to post this link because obviously SNL pokes fun at her and I don't want to take away from the awesomeness that is your video post! And I wanted to send you the one where it was all about her jacket collection (funniest one I've seen), but the only one I can find online at the moment is this one…

HOLY CRAP!!! You are my hero Miss Blake! Anyone that pimps 401ks are in my group of favorite people
It's my #1 thang! And Suze knows what's up – so people best pay attention! haha….This made my day, you're awesome.
Now be sure to meet me for drinks next month
He is very excited about those drinks with you! He wouldn't shut up about them yesterday!
Suze Orman should be writing a post about how lucky she was to find out about you.
Suze once replied to my tweet, and I almost died of excitement. I don't even know how you are processing this all right now. Congrats
OMFG is right! And why shouldn't she notice? Your blog is fantastic. Congratulations, Jenny!
AH, that's so exciting Jenny. I'm so proud of you!
What great tips too. It's good to hear I'm already doing what she suggests and then also, some additional things I should jump on.
Love Suze!
Amazing (and good advice) – Congrats Jen!
THIS IS AMAZING! dfgl;kjdfg;lkjdfg;lkjdfg!!!
HEARTS!
J MONEY!! Thanks for being so excited with me!! You are one of the first
people I thought of who could appreciate the awesomeness that is hearing
Suze Orman say your (okay my) name. I can die a happy woman.
And you better BELIEVE we are going to be celebrating over drinks…IRL
baby!
Hah – I love it! You sure you don't want to join us??
OMG thank you!! I wanted to start my blog post with
dfgl;kjdfg;lkjdfg;lkjdfg!!! (and I totally thought of our emails) but then I
erased it and started typing like a normal human being again
HEART! <3
Thanks Chevy! Now if only I could have gotten Suze to say “You bet your
sweet ass I'm gonna answer your question”
Thanks for sharing my excitement Toni! And for the kind words – I really
appreciate it
(PS – It's so great to hear from you, I got really excited when I saw your
name and comments on the book updates list! Looking forward to staying in
touch)
Aw, thanks Phil! I'm thinking Suze should really just agree to write my book
endorsement right now.
OMG she did? I barely processed – I think I almost FAINTED this morning! I
decided any time I'm in a bad mood I'm just going to say to myself, “It's
okay…Suze Orman said my name.” Thanks for sharing the excitement with me!
Thanks so much Grace!!! I felt good about already following her advice too
(except the credit union thing) – and just love how fierce she is! Glad you
enjoyed the video, and thanks so much for being excited with me!!
Thanks girl!! Glad you were right there to be all giggly and excited with me
BAM
Boom. Boom. POW!!
Can't wait to see you in a few short weeks!
I just listened to this song (sheepish).
See you in 3 weeks, yeah!
8 months. That's more than I usually hear for an emergency fund. But I agree! How cool to see Suze here!
OMFG JENNY! I don't think my face can smile any bigger!!! She said YOUR name!! Okay, off to check the balance on my IRA now…..
Thanks! I know – 8 months is soooo long – longer than I've ever heard too
(by about 3x), but I guess it makes sense with the way the job market has
been. Great to hear from you – thanks again for stopping by!
Awww, thank you SO much Andrea!!! SHE SAID MY NAME! I just keep reminding myself of that over and over – LOL. She was pretty serious about it too! HUGS!
Congrats Jenny! The next step is to get on her show!
Thank you so much Rob – and YES – that would be amazing! I already emailed
asking if she'd write a blurb for my book…can't hurt to ask, right?! Have
a great weekend
This is great! Congrats, Jenny!
I'd like to second Jamie's #*&YTE(OY(*&DSHK!!!!!!!
First of all I love Suze's advice. I'm always amazed how simple it is to take advantage of the 401K match. Free money…hello?!?! It's like getting renters insurance with your auto. Both are totally necessary policies AND usually cheaper when you buy both of them.
Second of all…YOU ARE THE MOTHER-FRICKIN WOMAN!!!! Did I tell you about the time that Suze Orman taped a personalized response to my online BFF's blog. It was awesome.
PS – THAT WAS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PPS – I'm a little beside myself that it took me so long to freak out with you and reply…
PPPS – But I'm a bit better because SUZE ORMAN RECORDED A PERSONALIZED VIDEO FOR YOUR BLOG!!!! @@#h%wkjdgkjshwe!!!!!!!
Nice work!
Thanks Irina! I thought you'd get a kick out of this video…and this needs
to be us one day!
Thanks Ben! Great to hear from you – I hope all is well
Still keeping up
with your blog and looking forward to crossing paths in SF again sometime.
Until then, happy travels!
Such a fabulous video!! Congrats Jenny for getting this done and thanks Ms. Orman for some sound and in-your-face advice.
Thanks Sarah!! I love the “in your face-ness” of the advice – Suze is my
Keep me posted on everything!
hero!! And so are you
Sweet!!! I love the Suze!
Thanks Elliot! Me too. I almost fell over when this video landed in my
inbox…she is such a rock star!! Awesome meeting you this weekend
