Video Post: Life is Like a Box of Cupcakes

While at Sprinkles Cupcakes today I couldn’t resist but film a little video for you. In this video, I give thanks to my lovely readers (that’s you, hot stuff), share my cupcakes-as-metaphor-for-life-and-side-projects wisdom, and disclose my amazing method for eating a cupcake so that you maximize the bliss in every bite.

The video (click here if you don’t see it below) is just under 3 minutes:

Want an extra laugh? Watch the (embarrassing) outtakes of me and my dad actually eating the cupcake (per my ingenious method).

While you’ve got your volume up…

I’ve had the great honor of being featured in several other places this month:

Blog Talk RadioLindsey Pollak interviews me for a segment called “Modern Day Moonlighting: Why Two Jobs May Be Better Than One” (~20 minutes)

  • Podcast Description: Today we’re talking about the popular phenomenon among young professionals of working a full-time job and pursuing other projects on the side. Why are people doing this and how do you make it work? I’ll be talking with Jenny Blake, who works full-time at Google and runs a coaching and blogging business, LifeAfterCollege.org, on the side.

Blogcast FM – Interview by Srinivas Rao (~45 minutes)

  • In this podcast, Srini and I talk about the following:
    • How I turned my post-college confusion into a successful blog
    • The intrinsic value of being a blogger
    • How to grow an audience without focusing on the typical marketing tactics
    • The no-pressure approach to starting a blog
    • The step by step process I used to find a literary agent
    • The numerous fringe benefits of sticking out in the blogosphere

Have a fantastic week everyone!

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us Nate St. Pierre

    First!

    hahahahaha

    How's that for adding value?

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Nate, you just made me laugh out loud. Since when did Life After College
turn into PerezHilton.com?! I loved it though – you win. Cupcake for you :D

  • http://mywestcoastlife.com/ Lauren

OMG Jen, I believe I've already told you this, but the cake part is my favorite portion of the cupcake.
    Me: love cake part
    You: love cake/frosting part
You + Me = perfect cupcake sharing buddies :)

  • http://chmullig.com/ Chris

Goodness, I have to scrape off most of the frosting to eat current fad cupcakes. Tasty, but way too overwhelmingly sugary.

BTW, thanks for the inspiration. Ran a 10 miler yesterday, in part thanks to see your marathon, etc photos.

    Two things:

1.) I listened to your “moonlighting” interview after we spoke the other day and you were awesome.

2.) I died laughing when you confessed that you just throw away the bottom half of the cupcake. I've always thought the bottom was useless, but it never occurred to me to throw it out!

    Great post, Jenny!

We could totally be chummy cupcake eating buddies because *GASP* I don't usually like icing. It's way too sweet. Give me the cake part every time. My favorite kind of cake is a chocolate chip pound cake with NO icing :) I do like cool whip based icing though.

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

    Really?! Okay new plan:

You + Me = Go back to Sprinkles, buy every flavor
    You: eat all the bottoms
    Me: eat all the tops

Us = pass out from cupcake overload / TOTAL AND UTTER BLISS!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Really?! Nooooo! Seeing frosting go to waste breaks my little heart.

And AWESOME about the 10-miler – congrats! So happy I could help inspire in some way :) Doesn't it feel good to run the farthest distance of your life, then do it over and over as you go farther and farther? There's something just really satisfying about that.

And thanks for reminding me about RUNNING, seeing as I have quite a few cupcake calories that need working off today :)

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

    Eve!

    1) You are awesome – and I'm so glad we could catch up this weekend
    2) Thanks for listening to the moonlighting interview – and the kind words :D
    3) Well, technically I mis-spoke (realized afterward that the video makes me sound like I have waaaay more self-control than I actually do). I DO eat the bottom half, but in my mind, it's pretty worthless. I like cupcakes too much to see any of it go to waste.

Have a great week, Eve! Can't wait for your guest post to go up :)

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

RYAN! Stop breaking my heart. That's like Ryan Knapp saying he doesn't like bacon on Twitter yesterday.

But actually, it works out perfectly if you don't like the frosting. I'll stick to the BEST part, and you can eat the reject half ;-)

And funny that you like cool whip! I am not a fan…prefer homemade whipped cream so much more.

YUM. This comment is making my mouth water.

I think I told you this – but we scrapped the traditional wedding cake and are having Red Velvet (amongst other) cupcakes for our wedding c/o Foiled Cupcakes (http://www.foiledcupcakes.com). You would very much approve. Maybe I can pack one ever-so carefully and hand-deliver one to you when we stop off in SF for a couple days during our honeymoon – which reminds me – we need to chat soon!

  • renelda01

You definitely can capture any viewers. The video is very relate- able and personable and straight to the point. The video is very authentic not like some gimmick about cupcakes and life. Indeed we need to not procrastinate. I am the queen of procrastination, however i love to work under pressure and I always deliver in the end. I just need to find a way to balance one task at a time.

I finally got to watch this now that I am home from work. So worth the wait.

since this seems to be the format today-
    1) I have seen this method in person, this is actually how JB eats a cupcake
    2) I love Jim Blake and his cameo was so necessary
    3) The “cupcakes are like, no wait, life is like…” line was so great. I love how you committed to the one take. So genuine and SOOO JB! It was also hilarious and adorable.
    4) Great analogy, I couldn't agree more. Sometimes we avoid cupcakes because the assumption is they are bad for you. But in moderation, what they do for your spirit is incredibly good for you. Goals and dreams are the same way, we avoid them out of perceived fears. If you address your goals in moderation, one at a time, you can have it all. You can eat an entire box of cupcakes. Just not all today.

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

That is AWESOME! I totally want to do the same thing :) So much easier to eat, and SO much more delicious! Someone told me cupcakes get pretty pricey, but I just don't care. I'm willing to cut corners elsewhere (ie leave a few flower petals off the aisle or something) to make it happen.

And yes – call soon! If you hand delivered a wedding cupcake I would just be beside myself.

    My comment, NSFJ.

Or at least NSFJ publically on LAC. But I’ll whisper it in your ear privately if you really want to know what I was going to say.

(Abbrevs, I use them. Be proud.)

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you so much Renelda! You know what? That is a GREAT reminder that some people work really well under pressure. Are you familiar with Myers Briggs? If so, I'm guessing the last letter of your four is a “P” – which tends to be more spontaneous and do things closer to their deadline. I'm a J, which is much more structured and likes to have things planned out in advance. For that reason, taking baby steps in a linear way really helps me – whereas for you, a big push all at once might be better. So interesting!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

JO!!! Thanks for watching even though you see me all the time IRL :D

    1) Hah! Thank you for confirming my cupcake eating method. Would I lie?
    2) Aw, I passed that along to good ol' Daddy-O – he says thanks!
    3) At the time I was like, “DOH!” but hey – one bite at a time also means not waiting for conditions to be perfect. Next video will be “cupcakes are like a box of cupcakes” – I think I was on to something!
    4) “You can eat an entire box of cupcakes. Just not all today.” PERFECTLY said JO! You are the freakin' best. Next time you-know-who is here we are going to go order ourselves some you-know-whats and all share in the delight that is the top half of a Sprinkles cupcake.

Thanks for the incredibly sweet comment – gave me such a huge smile :D

  • ngruen

I love your dad. He looks like a great guy. No wonder you turned out so well ;)

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Awww, Nicole – that's so sweet! I'll be sure to tell my dad – that will make
his whole week. We actually have a lot of fun doing these videos – he gets
to practice his hidden movie director skills :)

  • http://www.positivewavesbaby.com Greg Blencoe

    Jenny,

You definitely know how to go for the frosting!

And great advice about focusing on one cupcake at a time. Two of my favorite quotes that relate to this are:

Inch by inch, life is a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard.
When you take care of the minutes, the hours take care of themselves.

    Cupcake cheers to you, too!

    Greg

Aw..this was cute. I love your cupcake method…it's like a muffie (the top of a muffin).

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Akirah – A muffie – that's so cute! My mom actually sent me this link – I
think this woman is really on to something!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Greg – I love those quotes – thanks for sharing! I hope you are having a
fantastic week (and that shout-out to my readers at the beginning of my
video was largely inspired by one of your great comments – so THANK YOU!)

  • http://www.positivewavesbaby.com Greg Blencoe

Thanks a bunch, Jenny. I really appreciate it! Your blog brings out the best in me and it's so much fun to post comments and be part of the conversation. I hope you are having a great week over in CA, too!
