Success Demons…and a Signed Contract

I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. Partly because of the book deal, but partly because I got propped up by a small army of support these last two weeks by having all of you celebrate with me. Every tweet, text, email, call, facebook note, hug and high-five just filled me to the brim with gratitude. This book finally feels real — thanks to you.

Enter the Success Demons…Right on Cue

Just like clockwork when I feel that warm-fuzzy happiness wash over me, I immediately start hearing my success demons knocking at the door. These are different than my inner critic. My inner critic is good at hitting me when I’m down: “Of course you’re lonely, you aren’t lovable.” BAH! I get angry just typing that! Because I know it’s not true. But it happens.

My success demons, on the other hand, are new – and I’m only just discovering how pernicious they can be. The success demons come out the minute I start feeling relaxed and joyful. They say things like:

  • You don’t deserve to be happy
  • You have it too good – the other shoe is going to drop any minute.
  • Be careful, when things are THIS good, someone you love could get sick or die or you could lose your house or job
  • You just got lucky. What are you celebrating for?

Life is a roller coaster – OF COURSE bad things could happen at any minute. But it is such a shame to let these angry, ugly demons rain on the fun parade without reason. I never used to understand the quotes that talked about people being more afraid of success than failure. But now I do. Because with success comes the fear that it could all disappear at any minute. And the fear that somehow it’s too early – or too much – to be celebrating.

Mind Like Water

When the success demons come roaring, particularly the one about bad things about to happen, I remind myself of a popular zen saying “mind like water,” which means the following: when you throw a stone into a lake, the lake ripples in proportion to the size of the stone. It doesn’t start rippling BEFORE the stone hits (nervous anticipation), and it doesn’t ripple for long AFTER the stone hits. It just reacts, then returns to it’s normal calm state. Stress comes from regrets about the past or worrying about the future – so if I can just come back to what is in front of me TODAY, it usually helps.

Two books that have been tremendously helpful for me in this area: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks (which talks about the upper limits we place on ourselves) and Taming Your Gremlins (a book with a lighthearted, exercise-based approach to dealing with your inner critic) by Rick Carson.

Success demons be gone! I have one more celebration to share

Here’s another example of a success demon: I signed my book contract on Wednesday after months of nervous anticipation, and it was one of the happiest, proudest moments of my life. Seeing the words “Author: Jenny Blake” on a legal document brought tears to my eyes. I’ve dreamed about this since I was a little girl reading in the Green Apple Bookstore every day after school, dog-earing pages because I knew I’d be back the next day.

But when it came time to share this monumental moment on my blog I thought, “People are so sick of hearing about your success! Give it a rest already.” Ouch! So I debated whether to say anything…to post the video or the pictures my friend Julie took to commemorate the event. Then I realized those are just more success demons rearing their ugly heads. Because even if someone out there is sick of me, someone might be happy! And as Marianne Williamson says, “your playing small does not serve the world.” So here I go…

Video #1 – Signing my book contract! (42 seconds long)

Video #2 – An outtake, just for fun :)

The “million dollar signature” – up close and personal

Thank you. For just being here. For letting me celebrate, and for celebrating with me.

Ah, the success demons. I think you'll find that when you're an ambitious person it's hard stay content for very long. Though I force myself to appreciate the little (and big) moments along the way, I'm never “content,” and therein lies the curse I suspect — I'm not sure I'll ever sit back and say, “Wow, I've achieved everything I wanted to achieve. Let's sit back and enjoy the ride.” If I'm not grinding then I'm not living…

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

So true! And when you are constantly pushing to higher and higher levels, there will be new demons at every turn. As I tell coaching clients, fears just mean the opportunity is big enough. When we're just living the status quo – not hustling – there's less to be afraid of.

Love your line, “If I'm not grinding then I'm not living…” – great reminder!

    Stay awesome, Ryan Stephens :)

    Congrats, Jenny!

Thanks for sharing your honest feelings during this exciting time in your life. Although I self-published, I experienced some similar success demons. I call them Power Tools. It's those Personality traits that can build or destroy depending on how you let them affect you. As long as you recognize them and don't let them keep you from moving forward, you'll do fine.

    Best,
    Leila

  • Samantha Foodedu

Yay! I love your blog and I am sure your book will be fantastic-congratulations!! Those success demons are funny things aren't they? I think they pop up in everyone's life from time to time.

  • jamievaron

Can't believe I have been around to see the book from manuscript to deal to then publish! SO EXCITED!

Will you sign a copy for me? ;)

  • http://www.myhusbandwillnotwearmyclothes.com/ MandyImnotfamousMoore

Seriously, I am so proud of you. Congratulations, Jenny. You deserve it!

  • Sarah

Jenny … when the success demons come, I sometimes breathe easier by thinking, “What if the worst really DOES happen?” Well, so what then? If the worst happens, it happens, and you get to learn and grow because of it. Sometimes our fear is only scary because we let it be scary. Enjoy your success and take a day off from the normal, if you can. Eat a cupcake and have fun!

  • http://www.teresawu.tumblr.com Teresa Wu

Congrats!!! So happy for you. :)

  • http://katingiro.tumblr.com/ Kat

Yay! Congratulations! I can't wait to hear more about the rest of the process…. I am like 1% jealous but also a lot percent happy that good things like this happen to good people, maybe one day for me (and others of your readers) as well! :)

  • http://www.opheliaswebb.com Elisa Doucette

Well once again you've crawled into my brain. I was JUST about to write a post about the other shoe dropping and why we set ourselves up for the failure before we allow full celebration of the success because it's easier to not get hurt that way. Somehow conditioning ourselves to prepare for the worst and be “pleasantly surprised” by the best. Thinking that if we just assume that it was never going to work out and we should have known better than we don't have to admit how much we actually did want it.

In other news: EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! Congratulations girl!!!!!! I couldn't be happier for you. This is just the beginning. So much is under the water ready to come bubbling up in the ripples – success demons be damned. DAMNED! Enjoy the celebration, relish in your HARD-EARNED accomplishments and allow yourself the freedom and space to grin like a fool and dwell in this happiness. And run around the apartment squealing. Cause that's important too! Love ya bunches – congrats…again! :)

  • http://positivelypresent.com positivelypresent

So exciting to see that signed contract! Thanks for sharing your journey with us — including the parts of it that aren't as pleasant, like the “success demons.” I think so many people who have success face those and I'm so glad you're writing about them here.

  • EveEllenbogen

Jenny Blake! Who the hell do you think your readers are that ANYONE would DARE ever be sick of hearing about your success?!?! We are all here because we absolutely love you and look up to you. This was the moment that we were all waiting for! Tell those demons to back off, or else I'll have to kick their collective ass. (Sorry, couldn't hold back the cursing on that one.) Dude, congratulations! You are awesome, and you have worked so hard for this moment. Just let loose and BRAG for like a minute or two, if only to yourself, that you have a book deal! You are an author! You always have been, but now you're a PUBLISHED author, which makes it even more fun. Of course, that brings more of that fear along with it, too, but hey, hardcore living can be hardcore scary. But what else is worth writing about?

Congratulations, again! So much love to you, Ms. Blake!

  • http://twitter.com/ChaChanna ChaChanna Simpson

Author Jenny Blake, oh wait how about Best-selling Author Jenny Blake? I like that one better. I for one will never get tired of hearing of your success and if someone else is then that's because they suck!

I am super proud of you!

  • Cat

I'm typing this comment before I read any of the rest because I don't want to feel silly about what I say. AHHHHH, congratulations, this is SO exciting!!! I don't really know you but have been following your blog for a little while now and much enjoy your realness. I think it's going to be cool to say oh I knew about Jenny Blake and read her blog before she became a famous author. ;-) Thanks for not allowing your inner demons to win and embracing your happiness by sharing such exciting news with your humble blog readers! Keep us posted! (p.s. I really liked the stress/mind-like-water thing — it's something for me to remember to apply in my life!)

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thanks so much Leila! And HUGE congrats on self-publishing – I think that's an even bigger accomplishment because it's all up to you to keep the process moving forward. I couldn't do it – got totally stuck once it actually came time to finish (had planned on self-publishing at first). I love the phrase “Power Tools” – what a great way to think about our strongest personality traits! So true that it's just about recognizing how we're using them — and to keep moving forward one little bit at a time.

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you so much Samantha!! They are funny…who would've thought that we'd have as many demons around success as failure?! (or at least for me) It's been a surprise, but good new learning for me too. Have a great weekend!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Awwww, thank you so much AT! You really have been there since the beginning – it feels so much better now that it's all finally moving forward again. Wuhoooo!!! AND DUH I AM SIGNING A COPY FOR YOU. As long as you promise to sign a copy for me when YOUR book comes out :D <3!!!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thanks David – I really appreciate the note (and your post). My eyes welled up at the signature part too….this is big stuff! Have a great weekend – enjoy some good QT with Little D :)

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Jeff!!!! How fun to see you commenting on my blog :D Thank you so much!! And thank you for helping me celebrate over and over and over again. WUHOOOOOOOO!!! Cupcakes all around :D

    Have an amazing weekend!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Jenn – you are soooo cute!!! Thank you for stopping by – seeing your comment just gave me the HUGEST smile across my face. You are beautiful, you will forever be Mother Effing RAINBOW Brite in my mind, and I love you to pieces too!!! I'm already excited to be dancing in Vegas with you again next year. Who knows, maybe by then I'll have actual copies of the book?? EEE!!! Thank you for getting all squealy with me!!! Have a fabulous weekend :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you SO much Suki!! Yes – let's all have a demon ass-kicking party. They totally have it coming! Notes like yours really do help them disappear though – thanks :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you so much Mandy!!! Great to hear from you – I hope all is well. Have a fabulous weekend!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Sarah – I love your strategy for dealing with the success demons. On that note, how often does our worst fear actually ever come true? Not very…so it should hold as much power as it does sometimes. Thank you so much for stopping by – great idea to try to take a day off from the normal routine…I'm going to try to work that in somehow :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you so much Teresa!! Can't wait until your book comes out either :D SO exciting!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thanks Kat! I always felt those crazy jealousy pangs when people told me they were writing a book – didn't matter if it was self-published or actually published – it all seemed like an insurmountable mountain to climb. This can definitely happen for you too, and I'm happy to be able to share the process along the way! Feel free to reach out any time if you have questions – I'm always here to be a resource and a champion :) Have a great weekend!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Elisa – that's what virtual SP blogger friends do best! Read minds, console anger, squeal with glee – you name it, we pretty much cover all the bases, don't we?! You nailed it – sometimes it feels easier to anticipate bad things so that somehow we are less disappointed when bad things happen. But you know what I've learned? It rarely works. Partly because we are often wrong about how life will play out, and partly because it doesn't numb the pain enough to make it worth taking all the fun away. Did that make any sense?!

And sometimes admitting what we want is the hardest part – I find that true with the book and with relationships. It is like pulling teeth to get me to admit “I want a relationship” or that I was writing a book. If no one knows, then no one has to see our “failures.” Glad I'm not the only way who thinks that way sometimes…and glad I have friends like you to smack some squealy sense into me!!! Thank you sooooo much for your amazing note – success demons be damned is right! XOXO!

  • http://www.kristenbyers.net/ Kristen

Congratulations! You totally deserve happiness after all of the hard work that goes into getting a book deal :) And this is totally random, but I love the “B” in your signature!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you so much Dani! Glad to know I'm not the only one who faces the success demons – and it makes me so happy to have you here along every step of the journey – thank you :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Eve Ellenbogen! You are hilarious and your comment just cracked me up!! I love the hard-ass approach to my stupid success demons. It was really helpful to hear your take on things – you never cease to amaze me with the way you help me see new perspectives on things (especially about myself, which I feel somewhat blind to at times).

Love what you said at the end: “hardcore living can be hardcore scary. But what else is worth writing about?” SO TRUE!!! Thanks again for your great note, and I am soooo looking forward to following all of your amazing writing progress too!

Rock on Eve Ellenbogen, you're the best!! :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you so much Author and TV News Expert ChaChanna Simpson! I loooove “best-selling author Jenny Blake.” THAT title scares the shit out of me, but I'm starting to believe I can do it. Better to reach for the stars and fail than never try! You are amazing, and I'm so so happy that we've been able to stay in touch (and re-connect through Twitter). There's no one else I'd rather be going along this “after college author” journey with! You've always been an inspiration to me – so thank you :D Have a fabulous weekend!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Cat – thank you SOOOO much for your note and for being so excited with me!! Thank you for all the kind words – it means so much to have you following my blog and the book project. Except I prefer to think of you as right here with me, side-by-side.

Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment – and I'm so happy to hear that the “mind like water” analogy was helpful for you! Have a great weekend :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thank you so much Kristen!! And funny about the signature – I've been working on it for years. My main goal is to take up as much space with as much obnoxious flamboyance as possible… ;-)

  • http://www.smallhandsbigideas.com Grace Boyle

This is so exciting! I love the videos – great little inside edge to the signing and making it SO real! WEE

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Thanks Grace! Glad you liked the videos – filmed after a long day at work with terrible lighting, but whaddayagonnado!? Too important not to capture :D

    Have an amazing weekend!

  • Ali

I am so, so, SO beyond happy for you. You're living the dream! ENJOY IT. :)

  • Sneha

Congrats and best wishes for your book Jenny! I have been reading your blog for a while and its been one of those “hey why didn't I think of doing that” things…the blog articles are something I can relate to on all levels and I am impressed. . I read that you are looking for a freelance worker and I would be willing to help with anything related to your book or blog. Don't let those success demons get to you in accomplishing your dreams and once again, congrats!

  • Estefani

Congratulations Jenny!! i think it's amazing! not everybody gets their book published!!! :) :)
those “success demons” they're just that, demon thoughts that can actually make you realize that you've done something great or they wouldn't be there!! (see what i mean? :p) you can't let that bother you, you should just ignore them and continue to CELEBRATE!!! don't worry nothing bad is gonna come your way, this can be the start of many awesome things!! ;)

  • http://www.linkedin.com/pub/john-kreklow/19/35a/16a John Kreklow

    Congrats Jenny!

I totally hear where you are coming from when you talk about success demons. I could really relate to this article because I had the same experiences when I played basketball in college. On the day that I signed my scholarship letter of intent, I had finally reached one of my dreams and I was at an all time high, but little did I know it wouldn't be long before the success demons started to creep in. It seems like a lot of successful people have similar stories. I've found that when I stay busy and surround myself with good/positive people, it is harder for these thoughts to creep in. Keep up the good work and I look forward to following your blog!

  • http://theoffbeatreport.com Lauren

AHH! It's signed! Congrats, girl. You totally deserve it. Fend those demons away and bask in the reward of all your hard work! We definitely need to have our Jenny/Lauren date and celebrate. :)

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Ali – thank you SOO much for the book congrats!! I keep pinching myself…this really is living the dream. I hope all is well with you too – have a great week! :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Sneha – thank you so much for the congrats on the book! I'm so happy to hear that you've been reading and enjoying the blog for a while – that means so much to me :) I hope all is well with you — have a wonderful week!

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Estefani – thank you so much for the book congrats!!! You are so right – the success demons wouldn't even be showing up in the first place if I wasn't doing something worth feeling great about. Wise woman! I will take your advice and continue to celebrate as much as I can – thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement!! Have an amazing week :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

John – thank you so much for the comment and congrats! It was really helpful to hear your basketball story – nice to be able to relate to others on this stuff. It's true – I think a lot of successful people are susceptible to those demons or the “more more more” syndrome of wanting to keep achieving the next big thing (and not stopping to truly appreciate/honor the current accomplishment). The book The Big Leap really helped me realize that successful people in particular sometimes have a hard time celebrating. Love what you said about saying busy and surrounding yourself with positive people – great advice!! Thanks again for your note – I'm really looking forward to keeping in touch :D

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Lauren – thanks so much!! YES – we must celebrate (and vent about the state of the bay area dating scene ;-) . Have a fabulous week!

  • http://www.happinessandwisdom.com HappinessandWisdom

Success Demons! What a great description. While success brings them out, it's important to note that they are there are the time, running a silent program that limits us. I found that it was very important to work on identifying and clearing these limiting beliefs. Amazing things start happening when we can recognize our 'programs' and erase them. I hope you can kill some of yours off soon, to enhance the joy that could be yours, as you celebrate your great achievements.

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Happiness and Wisdom – thanks! You are so right that those demons often run on a silent program that limits us without us even noticing. That is amazing that you've been able to start noticing and erasing these negative programs…I'm getting there slowly but surely :D Thank you for your encouragement…have a fantastic rest of your weekend!

  • Bill P.

Hey Jenny, it's been decades since i graduated college, but my daughter sent me your post and i love it. Yep, the success demons can be crafty! The stone in water is a great visual for dealing with them.

I love your book signing post. I am definitly celebrating with you! I'm going to keep the signing video to pep me up when i'm working on a goal. Best of luck with your book!

    - Bill P.

  • http://www.lifeaftercollege.org jennyblake

Wow – thank you so much Bill! I'm so honored that your daughter sent you my post and that you stopped by to comment :) I have a really close relationship with my Dad too – so I just love hearing from 20-somethings and their parents! It just goes to show that we all experience things like Success Demons – we just learn to deal with them differently over time.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for celebrating with me! Best of luck with your big goals too – I'm really looking forward to keeping in touch :)

    Have a fantastic weekend!
